February is National Children’s Dental Health Month!

Dr. Givan at Calm Dentistry would like to take this opportunity to provide education about establishing
good oral health at a young age.
Taking care of baby teeth is important because primary teeth allow children to speak clearly, chew, keep
space for adult teeth and may affect social development.

When should your child start visiting the dentist?

Per the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD), children should see a dentist when their first
tooth appears, or no later than his/her first birthday.

What are some things parents should do to keep their child’s teeth healthy?

Oral Hygiene:
From birth you should clean your child’s gums with either water and a soft cloth or an infant toothbrush.
Once a child’s teeth has erupted parents should use a smear amount of toothpaste on the toothbrush to
brush teeth twice daily. Once your child is 2-3 years old use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. Parents
must assist their child with brushing and encourage children to spit out excess toothpaste after
brushing. Flossing with either floss picks or traditional floss should start once teeth have contact with
each other.
Don’t share toothbrushes, spoons, forks etc. with your children. Also, please don’t clean pacifiers with
your mouth. Doing so may transfer harmful cavity and gingivitis causing bacteria to your child.

Nutrition:
What your child eats affects their entire development including their teeth. Frequent milk,
carbohydrates, sugary beverages and foods are the primary culprits behind early childhood decay.

Why should baby teeth cavities be fixed?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cavities affect 60-90% of school-age children. Early
childhood decay is the most common disease affecting children. Prevention is key, however if your child
develops a cavity it should be treated as soon as possible. If left untreated, dental decay will worsen and
lead to serious oral health issues. Some issues that cavities may cause in children include toothaches,
infection that can spread, damage to permanent teeth, low self-esteem, missed school, poor grades and
poor sleep.
